Frequently Asked Questions

How does a water softener work?

The resin or mineral inside the mineral tank is specially designed to remove “hard” particles of lime and calcium, by a simple ion exchange process. The resin beads inside the softener tank have a different or opposite electrical charge than the dissolved particles of the incoming water. Because of this electrical charge difference, the dissolved particles suspended in your water will cling to the resin beads on contact, thereby ridding the water of these particles, causing the water exiting the unit to be “soft”. The resin has a limit to how much of these hardness particles it can hold, which is why there are many different sizes of softeners and also why regeneration or brining is required.

Do I need a water softener if I'm on city water?

City water is treated so that it meets (EPA) requirements for healthy and safe consumption. However, minerals in your tap water could prevent you from enjoying all the benefits of clean, soft water. These minerals are liable to cause dry skin, resulting in calcium and scale buildup on sinks and tubs, fade your clothes and lower the life expectancy of your appliances.

Another common issue with city water is that chlorine may be added during municipal treatment of water. This is done so the water is free of bacteria and is safe to drink. However, once city water reaches your home, chlorine is no longer needed. The chlorine that’s left over may make your water taste like bleach and dry out your skin.

Do I need an iron removal system?

If heavy iron is causing problems in your home, you may need to consider updating or supplementing your water treatment equipment. There are two main types of iron in water. First, there’s ferric iron, which is insoluble and visible to the naked eye. It’s commonly called “red water iron.” Then, there’s ferrous or soluble iron, which is dissolved in the water and invisible. We call this “clear water iron.” Because water with ferric iron contains particulates, the iron can be filtered out with the right media. Dissolved iron is a bit trickier. It requires oxidations in order to change it from its dissolved state to particulate iron so it can be removed.

The most effective solution if you already own a softener is adding an iron filter that includes a unique air chamber that the water passes through first to cause the oxidation of dissolved iron, then the newly formed particles get trapped by the media inside. On top of that we specialize in using a media that not only removes iron but also arsenic and hydrogen sulfide.

Why should I buy from you?

While the product you choose and cost of ownership affect your ROI, so does the company you buy from. How long have they been in business? Do the installers work for them? A stable business with a reputation for quality will give you advice you can trust, and with a full-service business that does their own installations, you can trust that your water softener will be properly set-up to give you optimal performance for years to come. Micropure water is full service, family owned and operated with two generations ready to provide you with service you can trust.
